Mithat Alam Film Center
Mithat Alam Film Center
Founded by the donation of our alumni Mithat Alam (RA’64-RC’68) within Bogazici Foundation, the center has been serving on its own building since 8 March 2002.
The aim of the center is to help students interested in movies have a background as well as to support them developing specific skills in making movies for their future careers.
The activities of the center include showing movies almost every night during the year; preparing retrospective programs on film directors, actors and genres; organizing panel discussions and talks in which world famous directors, actors and critics participate.
The center also contributes to the development of a valuable archive of film studies by publishing books that document all these activities. The 8th “Movie Talks” book was published this year. Student volunteers share the centers activity program as well as their comments and criticism via a booklet called Sinefil with the rest of the campus community. One of the two major movie journals in Turkey, Altyazi (Subtitles) has began as a result of these voluntary students pursing their dreams to publish a film journal eight years ago.
Mithat Alam Film Center is an attraction point with its collection of over 7 thousand DVD archive and a reference library comprising exclusively movie related books. Bogazici students can barrow films from the center’s archive and use the center’s facilities to show movies of their choice. Students can form groups to engage in a wide range of tasks from making short movies to documentaries, stop motion animations and film studies.
Turkish Cinema Visual Memory Project carried out by students, documents the movie adventures of veteran movie-makers providing opportunities for the generations to get to know the doyens of the Turkish cinema. Hisar Choice of Short Films, actualized on a yearly basis collects the best short films made in the country.
Mithat Alam Film Center believes in the importance of students’ actively producing their work and implements all its projects in cooperation with the students. More detailed information on the centers’ agenda and the guidelines for using its facilities can be found at www.mafm.boun.edu.tr.
